Taking Product Photography to the Outdoors
As a social media manager and strategist, I’ve always felt confident about the big-picture stuff: the strategy, the planning, the understanding of what works and why. But when it comes to content creation, there’s always been room for growth. That’s why I decided to take a product along on my latest camping trip to Zion! I wanted to practice my photography skills.
I packed up my camera and my Hydrofy packets. With a strategy that I felt proud of, I knew it was time to get more comfortable with creating content that’s just as impactful as the strategies behind it.
The Importance of the Journey, Not Just the Outcome
Even if the client doesn't fall in love with the photos or the angles you chose, that doesn’t mean the effort wasn’t worthwhile. Not every shot is going to be perfect, and not every image will make it into a final portfolio. But every single shot contributes to your growth. They provide you with the practice, the insights into what works and what doesn’t, and the knowledge you need to fine tune your eye for future shoots.
I’ve learned that not every photo needs to be a AMAZING. The real goal is getting better every time you get out there. With every attempt, you’re getting closer to refining your process, whether it’s adjusting lighting, framing, or just learning how to best present a product in its element.
Using These Photos for Your Portfolio
Another important takeaway from this trip was how much these photos, whether they end up being shared with a client or not, can help build your portfolio. Even if they’re not the perfect final product, they’re a part of your journey. They show how you’re experimenting, how you’re learning, and how you’re pushing yourself to expand beyond your comfort zone. Every shot you take adds to your body of work, and that’s invaluable as you continue growing in your role as a content creator and social media manager.
What I Took Away
Ultimately, it’s not just about getting that perfect shot (although I’m still working on that). It’s about the growth that comes from doing the work—both in strategy and content creation. And that’s something I’ll carry with me into every new project I take on.
So, if you’re just starting out, or if you’re like me and always learning, don’t shy away from those moments where the photos might not be exactly what you envisioned. They’re all part of your journey. Every click of the camera, every post, every project is an opportunity to get better and build the content library that speaks to your expertise.
Take your product outdoors, explore new angles, and learn from every single shot. Check out the photos I got!
